Road Trip Weather

Weather along your route

See the forecast for each town at the hour you'll drive through it. Add stops, leave now or later, and find the best time to go.

When are you going?

How it works

  1. Route. We find the driving route between your start, stops, and destination.
  2. Timing. We work out when you'll reach each point along the road, counting the time you spend at each stop.
  3. Forecast. For each point we pull the National Weather Service hourly forecast and any active warnings, and match the hour you'll be there.
  4. Best time. We check leaving a few hours earlier or later against the same forecasts, and tell you if another time misses the weather.

When there's more than one way to go, we compare the routes and point out when a slightly longer drive avoids rough weather.

Questions

How far ahead can I plan?

Hourly forecasts run about 6 days out. You can pick any departure up to a week away; stretches past the forecast show as "no forecast yet."

Can I add more than one stop?

Yes, up to 8. Pick how long you'll stay at each one, from driving through to overnight, and the later arrival times move with it.

What counts as rough weather?

Snow, sleet, freezing rain, thunderstorms, heavy rain, winds of 35 mph or more, near-freezing temperatures with a real chance of rain, and any severe weather warning. Rain showers, fog, and gusty winds get a heads up.

Does it work outside the US?

Routes work in many countries, but forecasts come from the US National Weather Service, so weather covers the United States only.

Is this a replacement for checking conditions?

No. Forecasts change and can be wrong. Check your state's road conditions (call 511) before and during your drive.
